Abstract : The contact potential difference between water and ice has never been previously measured although this difference is of considerable importance in meteorology. In our opinion, it is precisely the collision of drops of water with ice crystals in clouds which causes the electricity of lightning. The experiments show that the contact potential difference between water and ice is 0.17 plus or minus 0.025. Thus, contrary to the opinions of Simpson and Wilson, we believe the chief cause of the electricity of lightning is the contact potential difference between water and ice. (Author)
