Abstract : The unfrozen water content of a soil can be determined by calculating the partial molar free energy of water (delta F bar, subscript l) at any temperature and referring this value to the plot of delta F bar, subscript l vs. the water content of the soil under consideration. A plot of delta F bar, subscript l vs. water content can be obtained from a moisture characteristic curve at room temperature. Methods of calculating the numerical values for the graphs are outlined. Data are given for granular, clay, loam, and peat soils and for Namontmorillonite, so that the results should be useful in estimating unfrozen water by comparing an unknown soil with a similar soil in the report.
