Abstract : Holding a small amount of moderator material at very low temperatures in a nuclear reactor provides a very useful source for the production of high-intensity low-energy neutron beams, which beams are employed in studies concerning the solid and liquid structural state of materials. Since very little is known of the factors affecting the efficiency of such sources, an experimental facility has been placed in operation to study various parameters, particularly the spatial distribution of the cold moderator. The facility and its design and operation are described, with emphasis on problems created by the addition of a nuclear radiation field to the cryogenic environment. The results of initial studies on the moderation of neutrons by solid methane at 84K are presented. (Author)
