Abstract : The report presents a picture of the M. I. T. Computation Center with emphasis upon present performance and its supervision. The actual configuration is assumed. After a presentation of the organizational framework, other batch-processing operations are briefly discussed (as a summary of many direct observations of the general operation of the Center). A detailed analysis of certain variables is made from data on time-sharing operations: System parameters; grade of service; and user's behavior. Simulation is used to get further knowledge of the dynamic behavior. Three models are presented and they use as input the results of the observations reported in the previous parts. The models represent three different standpoints: Real-time decisions (reaction to overload conditions); day-to-day operations (rules for balancing the batch-processing load and the time-sharing load); long-term study (several management attitudes for the next six months interim period are studied).
