Abstract : The inelastic response of igneous and metamorphic rocks to alternating stress has been measured at low frequency under hydrostatic confining pressure. The inelasticity is characterized by an internal friction and modulus defect that are quite pressure sensitive. It is shown from the laboratory data that no significant contributions to the observed tidal friction is expected from the solid earth and that particle melting will result in a low velocity, low Q zone in the mantle.
