Abstract : A shallow- and deep-water test program was conducted to assess the system performance of 19 ocean-bottom seismograph units. The test results were evaluated for rate of recovery of units and operation of electrical and mechanical components. Of the 18 shallow drops, 16 units surfaced on sonar recall, one because of a saltwater leak and one with the backup clock. Of the 16 deep drops, 9 units surfaced on sonar recall, three because of saltwater leaks and four on spurious sonar signals or back-up clock. The amplifier electronics and clock operated within specifications. Tests showed that the tape recorder ran reliably; however, the recorder was generating a 41-cps mechanical vibration which was sensed by the seismometers. This vibration increased system noise and, in certain cases, reduced the dynamic range for seismic data. Land tests showed that vertical seismometer outputs duplicated from unit to unit. During water tests, however, all channels showed a 4-cps 'resonance' at random intervals which is the most serious unexplained problem connected with the units. (Author)
