Abstract : It is shown that in the southern portion of Germany, and in Finland, Ghana and Nigeria central place systems have reached maximally probable states which are explainable with the assumption that a hierarchical system of hexagonal market areas is present on the land. Furthermore, it is shown that the existing system results from a mixture of several different central place hierarchies present in these areas.
