Abstract : The purpose of this pilot study was to initiate an investigation of certain basic indices of international social change and their implications for international affairs, international alliances and the outbreak and waging of war. Data were collected for all the Major Powers of Europe together with the United States, Japan and China--at four year intervals, beginning in 1870 and ending in 1922--for the following dimensions: national status; population; area; economy (GNP or equivalent, agricultural-industrial balance); conflict (number of wars, casualties, duration); international interaction (rank order of trade partners, percentage of total trade with number one partner, GNP/trade, conflict behavior toward trade partners).
