Abstract : An investigation was made for developing capability in low energy electron diffraction (LEED): (1) to determine the detailed structure of crystal surfaces, (2) to identify impurities on the surface, in particular of nominally very pure gold, (3) to remove impurities from the surface, and (4) to design apparatus which will contribute to the development of scattering theory from low energy electrons and at the same time provide quantitative measurement of adsorption parameters at low temperatures.
