Abstract : Radial and tangential residual stresses are determined as a function of stress relief temperature. Disks were sliced from a hydraulically overexpanded cylinder and subjected to various heat treatments. Residual stresses remaining after heat treatment were determined by removing material from the outer periphery of the disks. Strains were measured on the bore of the disk as a function of the amount of material removed. The maximum tangential residual stress at the bore was 55,000 psi with no stress relief treatment. At a stress relief temperature of 1050F, there was no measurable residual stress. (Author)
