Abstract : The three-independent variable method of characteristics may be utilized to solve problems of steady and unsteady flow regimes. The technique of finite differences may be utilized to effectively solve the potential equation in the characteristic surface. The applications of this method may be extended to solve problems related to asymmetric flow fields, unsteady flow fields, and mixed flow fields for either inside flow or outside flow conditions. Thus, it may be possible to determine the flow characteristics of nozzles, wakes, re-entry bodies, and many other types of problems encountered in the field of gas dynamics. (Author)
