Abstract : Beta dose rates, gamma spectra and decay of effluent particles from the PHOEBUS 1B EP-IV reactor test run were measured. These measurements are an extension of the beta hazard prediction studies which have thus far consisted of theoretical and empirical calculations for the dose rates from unfractionated spherical carbon-coated uranium carbide fuel particles. A theoretical treatment of the beta dose rate to tissue from actual effluent fuel particles requires knowledge, not yet available, of their fission-product fractionation, radionuclide distribution and shape. On the other hand, empirical calculations of beta dose rates of actual effluent fuel particles based on calibrated field measurements with simple, rugged instruments would provide a more direct method of evaluating the hazard in a particular situation. Development of such a system would require coordinated field and laboratory measurements on a variety of effluent particles. The report presents the results of the initial phase of the study to provide such a system for beta dose-rate determinations. (Author)
