Abstract : The objectives of the program were two-fold: select commercially available thermosetting adhesive systems and formulations that could be used as underwater adhesive systems; and demonstrate the feasibility of converting selected adhesive formulations to capsular adhesive systems thereby insuring improved versatility and logistic properties. As design goals, the selected capsular adhesive systems were required to meet the following requisites: Yield a cure time of 30 seconds or less; bond to both dry and wet (submerged) substrates of wood, metal, and concrete; and, yield a bond strength of 0.5 psi after a 30 second cure. Studies revealed that none of the commercially available systems met all of the contract requirements. Of the systems evaluated, the polysulfides and cyanoacrylates did meet more of the requirements than any of the other systems. Capsular adhesive systems possessing various design goal requirements were developed using the polysulfide, polyester, epoxy and cyanoacrylate systems.
