Abstract : A statistical model was developed for a direction-finding site at HF (1 - 30 MHz). The model was used to analyze the effects of extended re- radiators on D/F accuracy and was examined both theoretically and experimentally. An explicit expression is obtained for the probability density distribution of the electric field amplitude as a function of each of two quantities; azimuthal position of the transmitter and transmitter frequency. The distribution is shown to be a one-parameter Rice distribution in each case. The parameter may be obtained by sampling over either azimuthal angle or frequency. It is suggested that this parameter be used as a single-number criterion for the evaluation of D/F sites.
