Abstract : Autooxidation of trimethylborane was studied spectroscopically at temperatures ranging from 77 to 91K. The first detectable species was dimethylboryl methyl peroxide, (CH3)2BOOCH3. Spectroscopic changes which occurred upon standing at 77K, and upon thermal cycling from 77-117K are consistent with reversible formation of a coordination-polymeric species at the lower temperatures. Further work was conducted on the reaction of nitrosonium nitrate with isobutylene. It is suggested that the red color associated with nitrosonium nitrate is attributable to the presence of a small amount of (NO)2(+)NO3(-). Undetectable by low-temperature ESR measurements, the concentration of this species has been affixed as less than 0.001 mole-%. The reaction of tetrafluorohydrazine with iron pentacarbonyl produces an unstable carbonyl compound of the approximate composition Fe(CO)F3. (Author)
