Abstract : Aviation forecasters on a test basis have prepared short-range terminal weather forecasts with and without the use of special mesoscale data. The purposes of the test were to develop mesoscale forecast techniques, compare the manually prepared forecasts with computer generated techniques, and to assess the utility of the mesonet for improvement of terminal weather predictions. The overall participation by the Weather Bureau and the reactions and experiences of the test forecasters are summarized. Difficulties were noted by the test forecasters in using mesoscale data after extensive previous experience only at the macroscale level. This, coupled with unfamiliarity with weather sensor responses as they relate to observations, limited the development of new mesoscale forecast techniques. (Author)
