Abstract : A tutorial presentation of the theory of earth-orbital navigation is given. The treatment begins with a summary of results from optimal filter theory for discrete-time linear systems. It is shown how these results can be applied to develop a data filtering algorithm for a certain class of discrete-time nonlinear systems. The latter results are then applied to obtain an algorithm for earth-orbital navigation. A discussion of certain specific aspects of the navigation algorithm is given in terms of its computational problems, the choice of coordinate systems, force models, and navigation measurement configurations. Although primary attention is given to self-contained navigation systems for use on-orbit, the general formulation is applicable to a variety of space missions. (Author)
