Abstract : The side leakage effect in a high speed gas lubricated bearing was treated by two approximate methods. The first is a linearized 'ph' solution of the asymptotic differential equation. The second is a Karman-Cohlhausen type boundary layer analysis. Both methods were applied to the flat slides and the results are shown to favorably agree with those of an accurate finite difference solution. The asymptotic approach is recommended for high speed (high lambda cases rather than the finite difference method because as lambda increases the accuracy of the asymptotic solution increases while the accuracy of the finite difference solution degenerates.
