Abstract : The mean levels of serum cholesterol, phospholipids, and lipoproteins found to date are given as a function of age of subjects. Weight and height data are also included. Most lipid and lipoprotein means have tended to increase with increased age, but during the younger years the high density lipoproteins decreased. The increases in mean levels have been more variable for some of the lipids and lipoproteins than for others. Several individual patterns of change in some of the lipid and lipoprotein levels are presented to illustrate the variations in levels and in patterns of change encountered in the study. The possible meaning of these individual differences in terms of development of cardiovascular disease is discussed. (Author)
