Abstract : Although the problem of calculating the shear stress distribution around a cylinder has received considerable attention, no direct measurements have been reported. One of the reasons for this is that instruments for measuring the shear stress are limited because of the difficulties involved in their calibration or because of the relatively large size of the transducer. A new electrochemical method which does not have these shortcomings was used to study the flow around a circular cylinder over the Reynolds number range of 60-340. These allowed a direct examination of the validity of the boundary layer theory and of some aspects of the flow in the wake. The calculations based on boundary layer are found to be valid for Re > 150. The measurements in the neighborhood of the front stagnation point are found to depart much more abruptly from the solution for Re approaching infinity than is indicated by calculations of Van Dyke for stagnation flow at a parabolic cylinder. The wall shear stresses in the wake regions are quite small. With the exception of the region in the vicinity of the rearwardmost point of the cylinder there is a small but a definite effect of the Reynolds number of the shear stress. (Author)
