Abstract : In the mouse hippocampus infected with Japanese encephalitis virus, swollen mitochondria with an inclusion body were observed in the cytoplasm of the multipolar neurons with the electron microscope. Such inclusion body was never observed in normal or damaged neurons. The inclusion body observed consists of three types: a triangular body with the lamellar structure surrounding the clear centrum; a rounded body containing a dense core in the shape of a dumbbell or a saddle within the lamellar structure; and a roughly rectangular, paracrystalline body packed closely with dense lines about 25 A thick in a parallel array. The particles 140 to 260 A in diameter, found in the matrix of swollen mitochondria containing an inclusion body, are discussed under consideration of virus infection. (Author)
