Abstract : A study is reported in which a very fast acting miniature total enthalpy probe is evaluated. The probe operates on the principle of total calorimetry but in contrast to other probe types using this principle, can operate in a very few milliseconds. Hence, enthalpy traverses in high temperature streams can be made in a single sweep of the probe. Experimental studies showed good probe performance at high temperature in both cooled and uncooled probe models. Probe diameters as small as 0.050 inches were constructed and used with success in a nitrogen arc jet at enthalpies up to 7000 Btu/lb. Comparative evaluations using other enthalpy measuring devices indicate the rapid response technique to be superior in terms of speed, size, simplicity, and operational limits. Probe accuracy appears to be comparable to that of the slower acting comparison methods used in the experimental work. (Author)
