Abstract : The report covers a study to represent electric machines on analog computers with the representation being usable when the machine is supplied by nonsinusoidal voltages. Wide latitude is permitted in the types of inputs, discussion of space harmonic effects is included, and direct measurement of current and voltage which is adaptive to the study of the inverter or cycloconverter induction motor drives, now under intensive investigation, is also considered. The computer simulation is based on the coupled circuit approach to machine analysis, which permits ready representation of both steady state and transient phenomena; winding or voltage unbalance; space harmonics; and application of the scheme to a range of types of machines. Results show the application of the simulation to both induction and synchronous machines. The fundamental space harmonic only, the fundamental and third space harmonic only, or all the space harmonics are considered. The report concludes that: (1) Successful direct simulation of the 2-phase induction motor with and without space harmonics and simulation of a primitive synchronous motor and generator with the same basic simulation system indicate feasibility and versatility of the method; (2) effects of space harmonics and direct measurement of current voltage are well-adapted to the study of inverter or cycloconverter drives; and (3) a large variety of conditions as well as many different winding arrangements can be investigated.
