Abstract : The 'static balance' technique for determining loads and forces on a ship in 'head' seas, was extended to a ship on 'oblique' seas. The present method, combining analytical and computational techniques, was developed for a wall-sided, semi-cylindrical hull shape for which one may obtain forces, shears and bending moments at any section of the configuration. Parametric data may be obtained at little computation cost. From this information and further application of modern principles of structural design, one may obtain the size of the hull or shell wall plating for different types of framing systems. The presently developed method is in the process of extension so that it will apply more accurately to modern and future hull shapes. It is also possible to consider additional waves of different relative heading superposed on the present analysis. Thus, the effect of irregular seas could be investigated. (Author)
