Abstract : A summary is given of work which was concerned mainly with elucidation of the structures of new boron hydrides and the relation of these structures to reactivity and to rearrangement mechanisms. Concurrent with this work has been a development of both the theory and practice of X-ray crystallography, and developments in valence theory which include studies of magnetic properties of molecules. One of the surprising conclusions is the prediction that the BH molecule is paramagnetic, although it has all of its electrons paired. New molecular orbital methods have produced a theory which is useful for predicting reactivity in borans and carboranes when the reaction involves very few steps and comparisons are made among similar expected transition states in the reaction. Finally the widespread occurrence of cooperative rearrangements is a somewhat unexpected general reaction of polyhedral molecules, and the details vary considerably from system to system.
