Abstract : A system of centralized automatic control for the process of melting steel in open-hearth furnaces is discussed by which a 'Stalevar' computer receives information from sensors installed in the furnace and transmits commands to auxiliary equipment. All information is recorded on numerical print-put machines and, instead of recording instruments, a series of numbers and signs light up on the control panel. An algorithm of the first approximation encompasses 79 equations and 25 tables. An example of determining the consumption of ore is presented. The computer serves all the furnaces in the open-hearth shop (up to 12). The time required for the computer to transmit furnace changes is 10 seconds. A single address command system is employed with 18-20 binary bit-places, and it can carry out 500 arithmetic computations per second. Capacity of the memory units is 2500 cells, statistical accumulator capacity is 400 cells, and permanent accumulator capacity is 200 cells.
