Abstract : Analytical methods were developed for precise isotope effect studies of the solvolysis of alkyl halides in CD3OH-CH3OH mixtures, determining the isotope effect for product formation by competition. The products of solvolysis can be isolated from the relatively large volume of solvent, without isotope fractionation, using gas chromatography and special collectors cooled with liquid nitrogen. These products can then be analyzed for the ratio of CD3 to CH3 groups present by high-precision mass spectrometric measurements. Precise isotope effect data have not as yet been collected. (Author)
