Abstract : An experimental-study program was conducted to characterize the transient response of acoustic arrays having different geometrical configurations. Experiments were begun to determine the effect of hydrophone directivity upon the ability of a hydrophone to discern the impulsive nature and coherence of ambient noise. The results of these investigations and recommended areas for future study are described. The purpose of the acoustic transient signal study was to provide some of the preliminary information necessary for determining the use of transient signals with present operational sonar systems.
