Abstract : The results of a previously reported study of the resonant absorption of the light from a ruby laser by a ruby sample lead to a reinterpretation of our early measurements of the anomalous dispersion associated with the R1 absorption doublet. The revised results are in excellent agreement with the general background refractive index as measured by conventional optical techniques. The deviations from the background index which are associated with R1 absorption are in good qualitative agreement with line shapes measured in the absorption study. A quantitative correlation of absorption and dispersion will require simultaneous measurements of those two quantities. A single mode laser has been designed and constructed which will reduce the complexity of the experimental data from which refractive index values are extracted and materially improve the accuracy of the results. Some experiments are discussed which demonstrate that the intensity ratio of the R1(plus or minus 1/2) and R1(plus or minus 3/2) components of a cooled ruby laser output can be reversed by altering the resonant cavity configuration.
