Abstract : The pinning force exerted by an inclusion or particle of a second phase on a migrating grain boundary is calculated, allowing for the nature of the inclusion-matrix interface. The shape of a grain boundary as it bulges between inclusions can be described by a differential equation which is solved numerically to obtain profiles of boundaries as they interact with inclusions. These profiles suggest that the pressure on a grain boundary, causing it to migrate, can be obtained experimentally by measuring the amount by which a boundary bulges between inclusions. This makes possible an experimental measurement of the pinning force exerted by a single inclusion. (Author)
