Abstract : The investigations are a first venture in attempting a theory of the thermal anode fall. The first section deals with the quantitative calculation of the anode fall of the Beck arc in dependence on the current. In past literature, the discussion of the anode fall of Beck arcs has been of a qualitative nature, basing on a thermal mechanism. In this report it is shown that within the anode fall region proper, which is responsible for the production of carriers, one does not find a thermal but a field ionization mechanism. However, proceeding from the anode to the column a thermal heating of a plasma jet occurs. Section II is a first attempt at establishing a general system of equations for the pure thermal anode fall mechanism. Several possibilities are compared. Section III deals with the kinetics of electrons and ions in a fully ionized plasma. In an extension to presently known publications, this study considers relative drift motion and temperature differences among plasma components, thus presenting a calculation of frictional force and heat exchange.
