Abstract : In 1959, a study was undertaken on the feasibility of automating the Missile and Space Division Library. Plans for automation included mechanizing circulation and recall, descriptor retrieval, GE-235 combination, desk catalogs in lieu of card catalog and mechanized listing of subscriptions to journals. Implementation was accomplished by phases over a seven year period. The paper describes the organization of mechanized systems, random access, information retrieval and the GE DATANET 30 SYSTEM. User participation on the consoles is analyzed and Library-User constructive teamwork is shown. (Author)
