Abstract : A procedure was developed for the determination of halogens in sedimentary rocks using thermal neutron activation analysis. Four degrees of binding are defined. The following was determined: (1) the Br/Cl ratio of the water soluble fraction has not changed since Pennsylvanian time; (2) the I/Br in the surface bound fraction was on the order of unity; (3) there was an increase of surface bound and internally bound halogen in going to marine environments. Phosphate content determined the marine character; (4) iodine and bromine were incorporated with the organic material and released to the interstitial water upon its decay--a portion was then lost during compaction as the result of the loss of interstitial water.
