Abstract : It is shown in the note that the head travel rate of a tensile testing machine is not always a reliable indicator of the strain rate experienced by the specimen. Observed data from several tests indicated that even relatively small specimens may have an effective stiffness which is greater than the effective stiffness of the testing machine. In such cases, the head travel rate must be used with caution. A method is given for determining the effective stiffness of a testing machine and for using information to predict the relationship between the strain rate and the head travel rate. (Author)
