Abstract : This monograph presents some results of recent investigations concerning the monsoon problem in East Asia by members of the Institute of Geophysics and Meteorology, Academia Sinica. It consists of seven papers covering three major aspects of the problem. A detailed discussion on the contributions of previous investigators is first presented with particular emphasis on their viewpoints and methods of treatment in comparison with the approach adopted by the present authors. Secondly, factors governing the formation of monsoons over East Asia and their characteristics were examined and a classification of the monsoon regions of China was made. Thirdly, the advance and retreat of the winter and summer monsoons over East Asia were studied in relation to the seasonal variation of the general circulation. The onset and termination of the rainy season over China were also examined in terms of the march of the synoptic seasons. Based on the studies outlined above, tentative conclusions on the problem are given. (Author)
