Abstract : The limiting equilibrium of a sloping spherical shell is studied on the basis of the Tresk criterion and the associated law of flow. The shell considered here is circular in plan, edge-reinforced, and loaded by a uniformly distributed transverse loading. It is shown in Fig. 1, where the shell thickness is 2h, R is the radius of the shell in plan, and R2 is the radius of curvature. The loading intensity q (the maximum bearing capacity of the shell) is sought. It is assumed that: (1) deflections and deformations of the shell are small; (2) the Kirchoff-Lyav hypothesis is satisfied; (3) the shell material is elasto-plastic and in the limiting condition is threshold of loss of stability. A cylindrical coordinate system is adopted and dimensionless parameters describing displacements and rates of displacement under load are defined and incorporated into displacement equations. Plastic flow equations and equations for the location of the neutral surface of the shell are introduced. Annular and radial forces are defined and used in equations of equilibrium of a shell element. Integral formulae for force and moment intensities are introduced along with appropriate boundary conditions. The author derives an expression for a parameter defining the limiting load, and he describes the steps involved in solving for the parameter. Plots of the mutual variation of the limiting load and other parameters are shown. (Author)
