Abstract : The influence of the dissipation of mechanical (i.e., acoustical) energy on the temperature of the chromosphere between 0 and 1000 km is studied. Departures from L.T.E. in the ionization of H and H superscript minus are taken into account. The rate of dissipation given by Osterbrock (1961) is probably too large by a factor 10 or more in the first 300 km, but seems adequate around 1000 km. (Author)
