Abstract : Wave propagation in a collisionless beam of single-charge carriers, such as an electron beam, is analyzed in terms of modes of axial symmetry. It is found that four modes are usually sufficient to fulfill the initial conditions, but under certain conditions six modes can exist. The mode amplitudes are calculated and a magnetic field dependence is found for an additional term in the space-charge mode amplitude. A field dependent term is also found in the expression for power flow due to cross-coupling of the space-charge and the vortex modes, which may explain the reduction of noise figure with increasing magnetic field observed recently in traveling-wave amplifiers.
