Abstract : Single crystal preparation of the perylene iodine charge transfer compounds was investigated for melt growth, vapor phase growth, and solution growth techniques. A binary phase diagram showing the perylene iodine temperature and composition relationships was determined. The relationships between charge transfer composition, temperature, and iodine vapor pressure were measured by a gravimetric sorption, technique. Ternary plots of the solubility relationships at three temperatures for the perylene iodine compounds in chloroform are presented. Evidence for several species of solid perylene iodine complexes was obtained from phase studies. These are: P7(I2)10, P2(I2)3, P(I2)2, and P7(I2)20. A method of single crystal growth of the P2(I2)3 complex from carbon disulfide solutions is described using an anti-wetting coating to prevent loss of supersaturation by precipitation on the walls of the growing chamber. Results from the program indicate that past and present difficulties in obtaining single crystals of these aromatic halogen charge transfer complexes from solution has been partly caused by lack of information about ternary solubility relations and partly from the tendency of solid materials of this type to wet the walls of the growth chambers.
