Abstract : Two experiments, both involving the interaction of high frequency phonons with nuclear spins in solids, were initiated under this grant: (i) Research into acoustic interactions with nuclear spins in antiferromagnets, and (ii) Research into acoustic interactions with nuclear spins in metals. The particular relevance of these two studies to the advance of basic knowledge of solids stems from the fact that the sensitive high frequency acoustic techniques utilized in these experiments are capable of investigating directly internal dynamic interactions not easily studied by other techniques. Thus in (i) we have been able to discover and investigate dynamic magnetic interactions (closely related to spin-lattice relaxation effects) in an interesting antiferromagnet, and in (ii) we have been able to begin a thorough study of spin-phonon interactions in bulk metal single crystals.
