Abstract : The photodecomposition of CO molecules by irradiation with the Kr and Xe resonance wave lengths leads to very small quantum yields of CO2 and C3O2. The CO2 quantum efficiency lies between the limits 0.0064 and 0.039 for the Kr radiation, between 0.0055 and 0.0091 for the Xe radiation. These values are due to the absorption of both resonance lines in each case. The experiments lead to the following quantum yield ratios (mean values): QCO2/QC3O2 = 2.6 for lambda = 1165A and lambda = 1236A; and QCO2/QC3O2 = 1.5 for lambda = 1295A and lambda = 1470A. Because of the reactivity of carbonsuboxide a certain amount reacts with H2O at the walls or polymerises before being measured.
