Abstract : A study of the silver oxide electrode was made with the optical microscope, using methods that had previously proven successful for the lead-acid battery. It was determined that Ag, Ag2O, and AgO could be easily distinguished from one another in the polished section of the electrode without resorting to any etching or staining. Crystals of the three phases were also found to be of a size that made it feasible to follow crystallographic changes that occurred during the course of a discharge. Although considerable variations occurred in different areas of the same electrode, results were in agreement with previously obtained x-ray data. (Author)
