Abstract : A study of the vacuum tank environment of an MPD arc jet was initiated by means of static and impact pressure measurements and by measurement of heat flux to calorimeter slugs distributed within the tank, in order to obtain an understanding of conditions which lead to environmental interference. The measurement of heat flux to calorimeter slugs placed at different axial positions near the tank walls shows that the distribution of the radial heat flow from the exhaust jet reaches a maximum about ten inches from the anode face and is nearly independent of power and magnetic field strength.
