Abstract : The agricultural development of the so-called 'virgin lands' of the Soviet Union undoubtedly is one of the major feats in the post-war history of Russia. It is a development which is fraught with considerable risks. Principal among these are the marginal weather conditions in the newly developed areas of Kazakhstan and Western Siberia. Soils there are fertile but drought and a short freeze free season are major hazards to grain crops. It seemed worthwhile to assess on the basis of the many existing Russian studies the potential of this new Soviet development. This survey is designed to give an elementary introduction to pertinent climatological literature published by Soviet scientists.
