Abstract : The use of strongly basic anion-exchange resin paper provides a simple and relatively short assay method for direct isolation and subsequent liquid scintillation counting of 239Pu alpha particles. Various adsorption techniques, specificity, and cross-contamination were studied in the presence of the fission products 89Sr, 90Sr, 95Zr, 106Ru, 137Cs, and 144Ce. Resin paper separation of a pure 239Pu solution and a diverse ion solution, prepared from 239Pu contaminated soil, was compared with separation by (1) anion-exchange resin column, (2) thenoyl trifluoroacetone (TTA) liquid-liquid extraction, and (3) zirconium phosphate microcrystal column. The conclusions were that the type SB-2 strongly basic anion-exchange resin paper: Adsorbs 239Pu from a 7.5 N HNO3 solution; applies to solutions containing small amounts of fission products; compares favorably in reproducibility and recovery efficiency with thenoyl trifluoroacetone (TTA) solvent extraction and zirconium phosphate microcrystal column separation techniques; provides a simple and relatively quick procedure for analyzing large numbers of samples.
