Abstract : The combined effects of thermal conduction and radiation on one-dimensional acoustic wave propagation were investigated using the moment approximation. Three distinct waves, corresponding to a classical wave, a thermal conduction wave and a radiation induced wave were found. Asymptotic expressions, presented for the damping per cycle and the phase velocities of these waves, compare very closely with direct numerical computations. Orders of magnitude estimates on the three types of wave amplitudes based on a temperature slip boundary condition and partial solution to the problem of two-dimensional, steady flow past a wavy wall are given.
