Abstract : A new source of highly stripped heavy ions is suggested based on the principles of the HIPAC (Heavy Ion Plasma Accelerator). The mode of operation and estimated performance of the ion source are discussed and a brief description of relevant experiments is given. Based on an electron density of 2 x 10 to the 10th per/cc and a containment time of 10 seconds, it should be possible to produce, for example, U+60 (60 times ionized uranium) at a rate of 10 to the 11th power ions per second.
