Abstract : First order focusing for the magnetic spectrometer of Browne and Buechner is discussed in the approximation where the focal surface is taken to be the plane tangent to the actual hyperbolic focal surface at the point for 90 degree bending. Expressions for magnification, dispersion, and related quantities are derived for arbitrary source-to-magnet distances, and compared with those for the hyperbolic case. Results of numerical calculations as applied to the University of Illinois 26 inch spectrometer are discussed. (Author)
