Abstract : An avalanche diode is proposed as a microwave mixer. In addition to providing its own local oscillator, the diode may amplify the input signal, and the I.F. output. These amplifications could result in conversion gain. Best experimental result was 4 db conversion loss and a noise figure of 65 db at I.F. = 40 MHz. The diode was operated in a standard medium Q microwave circuit. A special high Q microwave circuit was constructed to reduce the noise figure. Mixer operation with this circuit yielded conversion gain as high as 28 db and a noise figure of 45 db. It is shown that conversion gain is a result of negative I.F. resistance, which is only associated with high Q operation. The diode's I.F. impedance has been measured. The frequency pulling, and spectral noise associated with various microwave circuits has been studied. (Author)
