Abstract : The stress concentration near a break in a long elastic fiber in an elastic matrix is analyzed. The analysis is based upon the mathematical theory of elasticity for both materials. The investigation shows that both the magnitude of the stress concentration factor and the rate of concentration as the discontinuity is approached depend on the relative elastic properties of the two materials.
